Where to Stay in Cairo: Zamalek, Downtown, New Cairo, Heliopolis or the Pyramids?

Updated October 2026 · The HAPPYDAYS team
Greater Cairo is enormous, and getting from one district to another can take an hour or more in traffic. That is why the most important decision for a Cairo trip is not the hotel but the neighbourhood: stay close to the places you will actually visit, or close to your work, instead of losing half your day in a car.
The short answer:
- First visit, want to walk and feel the city: Zamalek or Garden City.
- Lower budget, close to the museum and sights: Downtown.
- The Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum: Hadayek El Ahram, or 6th of October and Sheikh Zayed.
- Business trip, malls and calm: New Cairo (Fifth Settlement).
- Short stay or an early flight: Heliopolis, close to Cairo Airport.

Times are very approximate: Cairo traffic varies a lot by hour and day.
Zamalek: an island in the Nile
Zamalek is a calm island in the middle of the Nile, with tree-lined streets, embassies, cafés, restaurants and galleries, close to Downtown. It is the best choice for a first visit if you want to walk in the evening and feel Cairo without the noise of Downtown. Prices are higher than Downtown.
Downtown and Garden City
Downtown is classic Cairo: Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum, Khedivial-era buildings, old cafés and metro stations. It suits budget travellers and history lovers, but it is busy and noisy. Garden City, right next to it on the Nile, is quieter and home to large hotels on the Corniche.
Heliopolis
An elegant older district very close to Cairo Airport, home to the Baron Empain Palace and the Korba area with its distinctive architecture. Excellent for short trips, early flights or business in eastern Cairo.
New Cairo (Fifth Settlement)
New Cairo is a modern district in the east of the city: gated compounds, big malls, restaurants, universities and many offices. It is quiet and clean, and very well suited to business trips, families and long stays. The downside is distance from the historic sights: the Pyramids can take an hour and a half in traffic.
Hadayek El Ahram: next to the Pyramids
A residential area beside the Pyramids plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum, sometimes with Pyramid-view apartments. Ideal if your trip is all about ancient Egypt, and it will save you hours of traffic. It is quiet at night, with fewer restaurants than central Cairo.
6th of October and Sheikh Zayed
Modern cities west of Cairo with compounds, big malls and restaurants, close to the Grand Egyptian Museum and Sphinx International Airport. Good for families, anyone wanting calm and space, and long stays. They are far from Downtown and Heliopolis.
Serviced apartment or hotel in Cairo?
In Cairo a serviced apartment is better when you travel as a family or group, stay more than a few days, or want a kitchen and space. A hotel is better for a night or two, or if you need services such as a gym or spa. Before booking an apartment, ask about the lift, the air conditioning and who meets you and solves problems.
Frequently asked questions
Which area is best for a first visit to Cairo?
Zamalek or Downtown, because they are central and close to most sights. If the Pyramids are your main goal, stay in Hadayek El Ahram.
Is New Cairo good for tourists?
It is good if you have work or family there, or want calm and malls. But it is far from the sights, so you will need a car for every sightseeing trip.
Should I stay near the Pyramids or in central Cairo?
If you are only visiting the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, stay near them. If your plan also includes Islamic and Coptic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili, central Cairo is more practical.
Cairo Airport or Sphinx Airport?
Cairo Airport is in the east, near Heliopolis and New Cairo. Sphinx Airport is in the west, near the Pyramids, 6th of October and Sheikh Zayed. Choose by where you will stay, if flights are available.
How do I get around Cairo?
Ride-hailing apps such as Uber are the easiest option for most visitors, and the metro is fast and cheap in the city centre at rush hour.
